Winter cuddled deeper into her husband’s shoulder, the postcoital haze slowly fading from her brain. To say he’d been excited when she randomly showed up at his motel was a massive understatement.

Sunlight glowed beyond thick curtains, the afternoon warming the room. The smell of sweat was in the curtains and in the sheets. Winter started to wonder how many people had had sex in this bed before them. Deciding that was not a helpful line of inquiry, she shoved the thought away.

“I missed you.” Noah squeezed her tighter, his heavy hand on the small of her back. He kissed her hair, her temple. “I’m so glad you came.”

Winter laughed, fuzzy little bubbles popping pleasantly in her stomach. “I missed you too. I don’t like sleeping alone.”

“Me either. I need to feel your butt against me every night or I can’t sleep.”

“I can stay the night, but I’ll have to get up early. I promised Ariel I’d be in the office tomorrow morning.”

“No. I’m not letting you go.” He squeezed her again. “I can’t believe you came to see me.”

“Well, I had to go to San Antonio, and when I saw you were so close, I figured I could turn it into an overnight.”

“Lucky me.” Noah touched her chin and encouraged her to look at him so he could kiss her lips. “So what’s the new case?”

“Uh…” Winter’s lips thinned. “Tim Stewart.”

The seize in Noah’s muscles was subtle but there. Every part of his body from his forehead to his toes tightened. “What about him?”

How could she answer that without ruining his up-until-now wonderful mood?

“There’s a custody thing going on with his uncle and his aunt. I need to make sure he ends up with whichever one will give him the best chance.”

Noah groaned, and he rolled onto his back and tucked a hand behind his neck. He closed his eyes. “At least it’s not about the friggin’ Ballstows.”

Winter bit her lip. “About that…”

“What?” One of his eyes opened and peered at her.

“Don’t get mad.” Winter leaned over his bare chest and fiddled with the USMC dog tags he wore around his neck. She didn’t know why she ever bothered trying to keep anything from Noah. The best-laid plans would fall to pieces the moment she looked at him and blurted out everything.

“I signed up to be a representative for JCH Bloom.”

“I have no idea what that means.”

“You know, the cosmetics company. From the catalog I told you about.”

Noah settled deeper into the mattress and shifted to look at her. “Okay. Tell me about it.”

After explaining about the glowing red numbers she’d found written in pen on the back of the catalog, Winter confessed about the money she had spent buying into an MLM cosmetics company. She figured that was a fight a lot of wives had had with their husbands over the years, but at least she had a compelling ulterior motive.

“I don’t really have a plan. At this point, I just need to figure out what those numbers mean. And I know they have something to do with JCH Bloom.
